Notes

Joseph Sydney Wood Starkey (1852–1938) was an English-born potter who created a rare ceramic character jug and vase depicting George Washington, often referred to as the George Washington character jug or "Ironside" jug.

Joseph Sydney Wood Starkey (also known as Sydney Starkey) did not run a large-scale commercial pottery, making his surviving work incredibly rare and highly sought after by collectors of American ceramics.  Working out of East Liverpool, Ohio—a historic hub for American pottery—Starkey is primarily famous today for a single, unique ceramic contribution: his patented George Washington character jug.
